Fall is my favourite season to go hiking. When I lived in Alberta I made the point to get to Jasper before the snow came so I could enjoy all the outdoor wonders this area offers. These photos are from 6 years ago, I can’t believe it has been that long and I haven’t shared them yet.
Jasper To Do List:Beverages by the Fire or on the Patio at Jasper Park Lodge | Miette Hot Springs | Hike Sulphur Skyline | Look for Local Wildlife | Take in the Panoramic Views
Along the way, you will find some stunning rivers (some glacier-fed) that look barren until you take a closer look.
There is a lot of flora and fauna in the park that dots the cool dark landscape with vivid colours and life. Make sure you pull over along the highway to see the views up close and take the time to enjoy the mountains and all the things that call them home.
When I lived in Calgary, going to Banff, Lake Louise and up to Jasper was such a treat. I have always said that if I could work in Banff as the Town Manager, I would go back in a heartbeat. With views like this, I don’t know why you wouldn’t want to live here – even on gloomy or snowy days.
Upon nearing the town of Jasper, I was immediately greeted by the local caribou, there were everywhere! This particular bull had a huge rack of antlers.
I stayed at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge for two nights and I remember that it was a lovely experience with the pool and having the enormous fireplace. This was a long time ago, so I don’t have pictures from any meals, but Instagram is full of shots like these:
The next day, I drove deeper into the park towards the Miette Hot Springs where I hiked Sulphur Skyline. This was such a beautiful way to spend the day. Getting to the top of the 8 km trail and seeing these views was such a great pleasure. It isn’t an easy hike, but it’s doable for those who haven’t hiked in the Rockies before.
The best part about this hike is that you can reward yourself when you get back down the mountain by taking a dip in the hot springs! I always look for incentives.
On they way back I stopped and watched these two bulls duke it out over mating rights. By the time I arrived, it looked like they were both pretty exhausted and the one on the right ended up walking away from the fight as I watched.
The Tourism Jasper has a fantastic Instagram account that will give you plenty of ideas to fill your time in Jasper. I’d say 3 nights is ideal to explore and enjoy the area.
On the way back, I stopped along the highway to catch this shot of the waterfall. Again, it’s the most majestic drive through the Rockies!
PS. If you go in the fall, you’ll also still be able to get your must-have canoeing on a lake shots.
